The Bribie Island Hotel, a beloved landmark in Bellara, Queensland, has been an integral part of the local community for over 84 years. Opening in January 1940 as Bribie Island’s first licensed hotel, it played a key role in the area’s development as a popular holiday destination.
The area’s transformation began in the 1920s, with the development of Bribie Island’s surf culture and the establishment of the Bribie Island Surf Club. By the late 1930s, the growing need for a hotel led to the acquisition of a liquor license in 1938. John Goodwin, a Brisbane hotelier, was awarded the license and opened the Bribie Island Hotel, designed to cater to the increasing number of visitors coming to the island.
The hotel featured modern amenities for the time, including hot and cold water and an innovative “sleep-out verandah”, designed to accommodate guests during peak holiday seasons. The hotel’s opening was celebrated as a new attraction for tourists with proximity to the surf beach.
During World War II, the hotel was temporarily commandeered by the Australian Women’s Army, but it was restored to its original purpose after the war. Over the years, the hotel underwent significant expansions while maintaining its original charm.
Today, the Bribie Island Hotel remains a local favourite with a popular bistro, a spacious outdoor beer garden offering stunning water views, and a family-friendly menu featuring casual dining options like roast of the day, fish and chips, and pizza. Known for its laid-back atmosphere and consistent popularity, the hotel is a must-visit for both locals and travellers.
Whether you’re seeking a relaxing spot by the water, delicious food, or a welcoming environment, Bribie Island Hotel offers something for everyone, every day of the week.
